If you get the error "Cannot register the hard disk ... because a hard disk ... with UUID ... already exists."  Screenshot

• In VirtualBox, click on "File->Virtual Media Manager"

• Select the Vdi and click on "Remove".

• Confirm by clicking on "Remove" and ON THE FOLLOWING WINDOW, CLICK ON KEEP

Then you can link the VDI. Follow this article to do so.
