Cannot find, load, run c:\\radar\\servers\\nhsrvw32.exe

After updating network version of RADAR from 8/9 to 10

When booting your RADAR server you might have the following sequence of error messages:

The path might differ depending on the installation path used by your previous version of RADAR.

Reason: nhsrvw32.exe is the old license manager delivered with RADAR 8 or 9. When you update to RADAR 10, a new version nhsrvice.exe is installed and nhsrvw32.exe is no longer needed. You have to edit your windows registry to delete the obsolete startup command that refres to nhsrvw32.exe.

Creating a restore point

First of all set a system restore point in case you make an error editing your registry and need to restore to that point again.

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore (screenshot)

Select "Create a restore point" and click on Next (screenshot)

Type a description which will help you to find back this point and click on Create (screenshot)

Click on close (screenshot)

On Windows 2003 Server there is no System Restore function. In this case goto Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup and click on Advanced Mode. Change to the Backup tab. On the left look for the item called "System State" and activate it. On the bottom make sure that in the field "Backup destination" it says "file" otherwise switch to "file". Where it says "Backup media or file name:" take care to note the full path on a piece of paper beginning with C:\, A:\, or whatever drive letter is given and ending with a file name with extension .bkf, probably Backup.bkf. Then click on "Start Backup" and in the upcoming small window on "Start Backup" again. It will take some time.

Editing the registry

Start -> Run (screenshot)

Type regedit and click on OK (screenshot)

In the Registry Editor go to Edit -> Find (screenshot)

Type nhsrvw32 and click on Find Next (screenshot)

When you get to an entry called "load" check the assigned data value. If it contains the path from your error messages your are in the right place. (screenshot)

Right click on load, then modify (screenshot)

In the line for value data, delete all paths to nhsrvw32.exe corresponding to your error messages. All items in this line are separated by a space. Leave all items which do not correspond to your error messages. There are probably no other items. Click on OK. (screenshot)

In the registry editor click on Edit, then Find Next (screenshot)

If you come to another entry called load, edit the value data in the same way. After that click again on Edit, than Find Next until you get the message that you have finished searching (screenshot)

Close the registry editor. Reboot the RADAR Server to make sure your error messages have disappeared.

Restore a restore point

Editing the registry can cause trouble if you make an error. If your computer boots with a black screen and asks you to start in safe mode you can fall back to the restore point you created before you edited the registry. Choose safe mode and press ENTER (screenshot)

You get the message that you are going to run in safe mode. Click on Yes (screenshot)

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore (screenshot)

In safe mode you only have the option to restore a point. Click on Next (screenshot)

Find back the restore point you have created previously. Select it and click on Next (screenshot)

To confirm, click on Next (screenshot)

Your computer will reboot and after starting up a confirmation message will display. Click on OK (screenshot)

On Windows 2003 Server, instead of System Restore, you go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup and click on Advanced Mode. Go to the tab called "Restore and Manage Media". On the left choose for "file" and on the right double click on the row which matches to the path you noted on your piece of paper and the date when you made this backup. Then activate the "System State" and click on "Start Restore" at the bottom right. Confirm the warning twice. This will take some time. When it says to be completed click on Close and confirm to reboot the computer.

Now you are back in the former state so the error messages refering to nhsrvw32.exe are back again. Ask somebody to help you editing the registry.
